I hadn’t considered making a miniature saddle until a couple years ago. This is my recently completed saddle for the 2012 ‘Cowboy Crossings’ exhibit opening at the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City. Several months ago I was visiting with my mentor Chuck Stormes about half scale saddles. We agreed that a common mistake is to use leather that is too thick for a true half-scale. One measure of success is how the piece holds up under scrutiny in a photo with no reference to scale. Ideally, no one would be able to tell that it was in fact a miniature. Five TCAA members have work on this saddle. Chuck made the tree (only one of three trees he has ever made for some one else), Wilson Capron fashioned the stainless steel rigging rings, Scott Hardy fabricated and engraved the silver decoration, Nate Wald made the reata, and of course I did all the leather work. This saddle is entirely hand sewn with three cord Irish linen thread. Keith Wilson made the stainless steel bound white oak stirrups that are inside the tapaderos. I learned much from this saddle, and I am looking forward to applying this new knowledge on my every day saddles.
